A Day of History, Hospitality, and Discovery at the James Monroe Birthplace

There are days when history feels especially alive — when walking the land, sharing stories, and connecting with fellow preservationists reminds us why protecting our heritage matters. Recently, members of the Colonial Beach Historical Society & Museum board, the Executive Director of the Westmoreland County Museum, and the Director of Economic Development for Colonial Beach had the privilege of spending a wonderful day touring and exploring the beautiful grounds of the James Monroe Birthplace.

From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this historic site is cared for with deep respect and dedication. The birthplace of America’s fifth president offers more than historical interpretation — it provides an immersive experience that connects visitors to the early foundations of our nation and the rich story of Westmoreland County. Walking the grounds allowed our group to appreciate not only the historical significance of the site but also the thoughtful preservation efforts that continue to bring Monroe’s story to life for future generations.

The visit also created a meaningful opportunity for conversation and collaboration among organizations and community leaders dedicated to preserving and promoting regional heritage. Bringing together museum leadership, historical society board members, and local economic development representation highlighted how history, tourism, and community growth work hand in hand. The discussions throughout the day reinforced the importance of partnerships that support education, heritage tourism, and continued investment in the stories that define our region.

We would like to extend a special thank you to the incredible staff who made the experience so memorable, including Dr. Lenny Levin and Susan Church, whose knowledge, hospitality, and passion for history truly enhanced our visit. Their dedication to preserving and sharing the legacy of James Monroe helped make the day both educational and inspiring for everyone in attendance.

On behalf of the Colonial Beach Historical Society & Museum and all attendees, thank you to the dedicated team at the James Monroe Birthplace for hosting such an engaging and meaningful visit. Your commitment to preserving history ensures that stories of leadership, resilience, and early America continue to inspire all who visit.

We look forward to future opportunities to collaborate and continue exploring the remarkable history that connects our communities.
