The Colonial Beach Historical Society & Museum recently welcomed Dr. Leonard "Lenny" Levin, Deputy Superintendent of the James Monroe Birthplace & Boyhood Home, for an engaging evening centered on the life of James Monroe and his deep connections to Virginia's Northern Neck.

Rather than delivering a traditional lecture, Dr. Levin invited the audience into a conversation. His storytelling style made history feel personal and approachable, weaving together the people, places, and experiences that shaped Monroe's early years. With warmth, humor, and a genuine passion for the subject, he encouraged attendees to imagine the world Monroe knew as a young boy growing up in what is now Westmoreland County.

Throughout the evening, Dr. Levin shared insights into Monroe's family, the culture of colonial Virginia, and the communities that influenced the future president's character and values. His presentation emphasized that understanding James Monroe means understanding the people and landscapes of the Northern Neck—where neighbors, family, and everyday life played just as important a role as the major events recorded in history books.

The conversational format created an inviting atmosphere, with audience members asking questions, sharing observations, and becoming part of the discussion. It was less about memorizing dates and facts and more about exploring the human story behind one of America's Founding Fathers.

Dr. Levin also spoke about the ongoing mission of the James Monroe Birthplace & Boyhood Home to preserve Monroe's legacy and help visitors connect with the history of the region. His enthusiasm for sharing that story was evident throughout the evening, reminding everyone that history comes alive when it is told through the experiences of the people who lived it.

The Colonial Beach Historical Society & Museum was honored to host this memorable program and extends its sincere appreciation to Dr. Levin for sharing his knowledge and passion. Programs like these continue the Society's mission of preserving and celebrating the rich history of Colonial Beach and the Northern Neck while creating opportunities for meaningful conversations about our shared past.

We look forward to welcoming the community to future programs that celebrate the stories, people, and places that have shaped our region.
